Artists from the Cleveland Area

Jim Jarmusch, Philip Johnson, and Harvey Pekar. What do these three have in common? The answer is that they are all from the Cleveland area! I want to write a little bit about these American artists from the area.

As you may or may not know, Jim Jarmusch is one of the most important independent film makers in the United States. He directed "Permanent Vacation", "Stranger Than Paradise", and "Coffee and Cigarettes" among others. Jim Jarmusch is not technically from Cleveland, but from Akron. So he is from the Greater Cleveland.

Philip Johnson is one of the greatest American architects in history. He was a members of the Harvard Five and was instrumental in spreading modern architecture in the United States. His most famous work is the Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut, but The Cleveland Play House, located between University Circle and downtown, is also outstanding. It has a very special glorious atmosphere. Cleveland actually has some other buildings designed by masters of modern architecture, including the Peter B. Lewis Building at Case Western Reserve University by Frank O. Gehry, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum by I.M. Pei, and the Louis Penfield House by Frank Lloyd Wright. (This one is actually in Willoughby Hills, but it is just 20 minutes away from Cleveland.) Also, the Fallingwater, the masterpiece by Frank Lloyd Wright, is located in a suburb of Pittsburgh and is just 2 hours away from here. I would not say that this collection of architecture in Cleveland is the best in the States, but it is somewhat nice to have in my town.

The last great guy from Cleveland is Harvey Pekar. American Splendor, a movie that is modeled after him and written by himself, was a smash hit in Japan. You can see his love for Cleveland here, there, and everywhere in his movie.

I can't believe that many of my favorite artists are from the area where I live now, but I think this fact is not just a coincidence. Local people say that Cleveland develops people's talents for art. I'd been personally skeptical about this, but now I think this is true. People in Cleveland are pretty receptive to anything and anybody. So, people living here are free from pressure in a very good way and able to feel free to try anything that they think cool. Sometime even I feel like creating some art simply because I know nobody would look down on me even though I made something not appealing to anybody. People would say "Wow! You really like this. Great for you!" I think this good nature of people helped artists to create something truly unique and creative. I admire this lovable trait of people in Cleveland, and I want to preserve it by certifying them as a living world heritage if I can.

A hidden treasure in Cleveland

It's been a while since I wrote my last article about the great milk I found. I have been busy doing things and making new discoveries in Cleveland. I want to write about the very best I have discovered in the mean time. The treasure I found is the view in the photograph I posted above this article. Do you have any ideas where this is? This is the view from the Rooftop Terrace of the Cleveland Clinic. I had passed by the Cleveland Clinic many many times, but I never had a chance to stop by the clinic until I went to see their contemporary art collection like a month ago.

The things you view from the Rooftop Terrace are quintessential Cleveland: downtown skyscrapers, Lake Erie, Euclid Avenue, and the industrial neighborhoods between downtown and the Cleveland Clinic. Every time I go there, I enjoy a different view due to the time and the weather. It is so beautiful even on a icy winter day. I believe that the view from the Rooftop Terrace is the highlight of their fabulous art collection.

You might wonder why they have the contemporary art collection at the hospital. The Art and Medicine Institute in the Cleveland Clinic offers the art program as a part of patient activities, but the collection is open to the public. They have one of the best contemporary art collections I have ever seen. The collection includes works by Name June Paik, Ori Gersht, and William Wegman among other renowned contemporary artists. I did not expect to see such a fine contemporary art collection here in Cleveland. It is just amazing. The audio tour guide is available in English, Spanish, and Arabic for free, and the parking fee is free for one hour.

I highly recommend you stop by the Cleveland Clinic to experience their great contemporary art collection and the fabulous view from the Rooftop Terrace if you have never been there before.

The milk I have been looking for

For sometime now, I have been thinking that milk in the U.S. is thinner than milk in Japan. I sometimes miss the rich fresh milk that I could get in Japan. I unexpectedly found exactly this kind of milk I had been looking for at Miles Farmers Market in Solon, which deals with quality fresh vegetables and meat. I had noticed the milk, but I had not tried it by then because the package looked sort of odd. I actually had to buy it because I had no time to go to another supermarket, but it turned out to be a great discovery!

The milk tasted so silky and smooth, and it had a rich flavor. I guess the milk contains slightly more milk fat than common milk from chain supermarkets. This is the best milk I have ever tried in the United States besides the milk at the Shaker Square Farmers Market that is freshly delivered from a farm, . The milk at the Shaker Square Farmers Market is 3.5 dollars for a half gallon. I think it is a little expensive, but the milk at Miles Farmers Market is just 2 dollars and several cents for the same amount. This milk has such a nice flavor for a very reasonable price. I will be buying milk at Miles Farmers Market all the time from now on. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you that the brand was SMITH'S D MILK. Their farm is located in Ohio, so I don't know if you can buy it in other states.

Comforting myself

I love big breakfasts. I sometimes dream of a big breakfast at a resort hotel on vacation, where I can enjoy any kinds of menus such as eggs, salads, bacon, sausages, fruits and even a glass of champagne! Or a traditional Japanese style breakfast including a bowl of rice, miso soup, Natto mixed well with cut scallion, and grilled salmon.

I made a special breakfast for myself last weekend as I bought really lovely dishes. I brewed coffee, toasted a pumpernickel bagel, and made green potage soup with potato, spinach, and blue cheese. While I was cooking my favorite foods for myself and my favorite dishes, I felt very relaxed. At the moment, I suddenly noticed that I had been tense and anxious most of the time I spent in this country. Living in another country makes people stressed out because it takes more time and requires extra attention to do anything. Making a nice breakfast for myself is just a small happiness, but something like this seems to be necessary for me to relieve stress of life and rejuvenate myself.

A recipe for homemade ricotta

Good morning, everyone! Pleasantly warm spring days have come back to Cleveland again, making me very happy. I made homemade ricotta cheese this morning as I had a lot of milk. The sunshine made me feel like trying something new! It was unbelievably easy to make. Here is the recipe for you!

Ingredients
1/4 gallon of milk
a bit of salt
some lemon juice

Put milk, salt, and lemon juice in a pan. Warm it up not, but not too hot. If you can touch it without getting burnt, that is the right temperature. As milk fat starts separating from whey, mix it slowly several times. Then, turn off the heat. Wait until you see ricotta cheese nicely floating in way. Drain it to be the favorable texture. It's done!

I made a small dessert of ricotta cheese with honey and berries, but I actually think something salty goes better with homemade ricotta cheese as the flavor of it is really mild and subtle. I also had ricotta cheese with freshly ground black pepper, sea salt, extra virgin oil, and white balsamic vinegar. It was great! I like to eat it cold. I got two scoops of ricotta today. If it is too little for you, double the amount of ingredients. Good luck!

Little Hungary, Balaton Restaurant in Shaker Square

I still can't believe it snowed the day before yesterday in Cleveland. I felt somehow betrayed because I was totally in the mood for spring. Yesterday's temperature hit a low of -2° Celsius!

On the day before the snow, I was happily browsing around Larchmere Blvd in the sunshine to take a look at the antique shops in the district, not knowing it would snow right after that. The antique shops were much more interesting than I expected, but I want to write about the restaurant where I had lunch instead of the antique shops this time because it was such a wonderful restaurant that I should write about it in detail while my memory is fresh!

Balaton Restaurant is a Hungarian restaurant located in the Shaker Square. It is not that difficult to find Slavic grocery shops, bakeries, and restaurants in Cleveland, but Balaton Restaurant is special because it has a history of 46 years, and carries on its tradition until today. You can enjoy authentic Hungarian food in a traditional setting there. When you step into the restaurant, you feel as if you are in Europe. The moment you open the door, you see the elaborate handmade embroidery hanging on the white wall, just like you would find in a little nice restaurant in Europe. Their food was as genuine as I would get in a little good eatery in Europe too. I had Beef Goulash, which is a kind of beef stew simmered with tomatoes and spices. It had such a good balance of the acid of tomatoes, the flavor of beef, and the aroma of spices. The slightly salty spicy stew and the soft homemade dumplings that came with the stew made a very good combination. I enjoyed a wonderful lunch in a relaxing atmosphere at Balaton Restaurant. I even thought this restaurant could be more authentic than a Hungarian restaurant in Hungary. I want to come back to this restaurant when I feel like getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, or I have my friends visiting from Japan to give them a chance to taste authentic Slavic cuisine.

A fine Italian Restaurant in Cleveland, Giovanni's

I finally had a chance to visit Giovanni's for lunch with some friends the other day. Giovanni's is a fine Italian restaurant, but the location is rather odd. It is located on the lower level of an office building, and almost hidden behind the offices. When you open the heavy entrance door of Giovanni's, you will know this is the right place. The door interior was throughly made of beautiful wood. With crisp white table cloths were spread on each table. Their customers were dressed up even for lunch. We actually did not expect this restaurant to be this fancy, so we were dressed a little too casual for the atmosphere, but the waiter treated us very well.

I ordered a fixed mini course called "Pranzo A Preszzo Fisso" for $11. The course allow you to choose one each of a salad, a sandwich, and a soup. I selected the mozzarella & chicken sandwich, soup with pancetta, and iceberg wedge with blue cheese dressing. When the plate arrived at our table, I actually thought the portion was too small, but it was more than enough. Soup and salad were perfectly seasoned to be tasted, and those came with bread accompanied with fantastic butter of fine quality. The flavor of the butter reminded me of that of Echire, an artisan butter brand from France. In addition to the mini course, we had casada cake, three layered chocolate mousse, and coffee. The casada cake was like a Japanese style strawberry short cake, and the chocolate mousse was very rich in the chocolate flavor. We really enjoyed the lunch at Giovanni's. Their food was excellent and their service was wonderful too. I paid 22 or 23 dollars including a tip and tax. It was not exactly cheap for lunch, but it was my best dining experience in Cleveland, so it was well worth it. I definitely want to come back to Giovanni's for dinner.
