薄切り肉が買えるお店 GIOVANNI'S/Where to get paper thin sliced Asian style meat

日本とアメリカで違いを感じるものは多々ありますが、そのひとつはお肉の切り方です。日本のスーパーにあるお肉は決まって薄切りですが、アメリカではステーキのように厚く大きい切り身か、塊のお肉が一般的です。アメリカに来た頃はこんな固まりをどうやって食べるんだ！と自分の方が固まっていましたが、今では１キロのお肉を買うことも珍しくないのですから慣れとは不思議です。

とはいえ寒いこの季節、お鍋に入れるような薄切り肉を恋しく思っていた矢先、素晴らしいお店を見つけました。それはLyndhurstにあるGIOVANNI'Sです。これまでもアジアスーパーで冷凍の薄切り肉を何度か買ったことがあるのですが、赤身のため調理するとすぐに堅くなってしうのがちょっとした悩みでした。GIOVANNI'Sは、その時にお店にあるお肉をお願いして薄切りにしてくれるので、冷凍のお肉と違って新鮮で柔らかです。といってもその場ですぐに薄切りにしてくれるわけではなく、前日に電話で注文しておくシステムを取っています。わたしは直接お店に行ったので、その日にお肉を見て注文し、翌日取り行くことにしました。塊のお肉を見た時から期待はしていたのですが、翌日実物を見ると、期待以上でした。薄さも日本の薄切り肉と変わりません。肉質も霜降りとまではいきませんが、赤身に混ざって所々に脂が乗っています。適当に炒めて食べるつもりでしたが、余りにもおいしそうなので、すき焼きにすることにしました。結果は大成功。もちろん日本で食べるお肉のように、溶ろけるようというわけにはいきませんが、柔らかさの中にしっかりとしたお肉の旨味があります。アメリカに来てから今までに食べたのお肉の中で、一番日本の薄切り肉に近いお味で、もう大興奮でした。クリーブランドにいる限り、これからいつでも豚しゃぶや牛丼が食べられると思うと、嬉しくなります。GIOVANNI'Sを教えてくれた友人に感謝です。

ちなみに良く薄切りの注文を受けるお肉はBeef Rump Roast、 Pork Belly Pork（豚バラ）、Pork Tender Loin（豚ヒレ）だとおっしゃっていました。今回私が購入したBeef Rump Roast は 1パウンド当たり$6.99 でしたが、豚肉はもう少しお手頃です。また価格は変わることがあるので、注文時に確認してほしいとのことでした。薄切り肉以外にも牛タン、子牛、羊など少々変わったお肉がとてもおいしそうでした。まだGIOVANNI'Sに行ったことが無い方は、是非一度立ち寄ってみて下さい。

There are many differences between Japanese cuisine and American cuisine, but one of the biggest difference is that we mainly use thinly sliced meat. Most of meat (beef and pork) at supermarkets in Japan is very thinly sliced. You rarely find a big chunk of meat. On the other hand, what we find at supermarkets in the U.S.A. is a steak, hunk, or rack of meat. I am used to the American style cut, but I sometimes miss paper thin sliced meat for my favorite Japanese cooking. I love enjoying a Japanese style hot pot dish like NABEMONO or SUKIYAKI, especially in wintertime. The steam comes from a hot pot dish is a real treat in this freezing season. It's actually not that difficult to find thinly sliced meat at an Asian supermarket in Cleveland, but the quality is not good enough. It gets too stiff after it's cooked, and I don't like it. Quality meat should be tender even after it's fully cooked. I missed my favorite Japanese style hot pot dishes and BBQ. I almost gave up, but I finally found good quality thinly sliced meat enough good at GIOVANNI'S in Lyndhurst. 

Their meat is special because it's thinly sliced but it's fresh, not frozen. In addition to it, a slice of meat has multiple layers of fat. This feature is very important to keep the meat tender when you cook meat in Japanese style. The beef I purchased looked very good, much better than I expected. So I decided to make SUKIYAKI with the beef. The result was fantastic. The meat tasted almost the same as I enjoyed in Japan! In fact, this was the first time I made SUKIYAKI in this country because I had never been able to find any good meat suitable for SUKIYAKI before I stopped by GIOVANNI'S.  Imagine my excitement! I am very grateful to my friend who recommended GIOVANNI'S to me. It's so nice that I can make SUKIYAKI, or SHABU-SHABU whenever I want from now on. I definitely recommend GIOVANNI'S if you want to make homemade SUKIYAKI or SHABU-SHABU. I'm sure you will like it!

クリーブランドの日本食材店 / Japanese groceries in the Cleveland area

クリーブランドにはいくつか日本の食材を買えるアジアスーパーがあります。残念なことに日本食材の専門店はありませんが、近郊の大きな街ピッツバーグとコロンバスには日本食材専門店があります。それぞれのスーパーマーケットには違った魅力があるので、ここでその特徴をご紹介したいと思います。

CAM（クリーブランド・アジア・マーケット）

ここがクリーブランドではおそらく一番大きなアジアスーパーだと思います。日本の食材もクリーブランドのアジアスーパーの中では一番充実しており、納豆、ラーメン、冷凍食品、餃子の皮、白菜、ごぼう、かぼちゃなどが売っています。ビーチウッドにあるトレーダー・ジョースやソロンにあるマイルス・ファーマーズ・マーケットから車で１０分くらいなので、この二つのマーケットに行く時に、ついでに寄ることが多いです。

パーク・トゥー・ショップ

クリーブランドで二番目に大きなアジアマーケット。便利なクリーブランドのダウンタウンにあります。パーク・トゥー・ショップでは中国、ベトナム、日本の食材を取り扱っており、CAM程に日本のものはありませんが、納豆、ラーメン、豆腐、そして新鮮なアジアの野菜などが販売されています。

天助マーケット

天助マーケットはコロンバスにあります。クリーブランドからは車で２時間以上は掛かりますが、足を伸ばす価値は十分にあります。ニュージャージーにあるアメリカ最大の日系スーパー・ミツワを除いては、私の知る中では一番良い日本食材店です。天助マーケットは基本的に日本にある普通のスーパーを小さくしたようなお店で、日本食を作るために必要なものは何でもあります。新鮮な刺身や日本のキュウリやねぎなどのような和の野菜を取り扱っています。驚いたことに天助マーケットで買ったキュウリは日本で食べるキュウリと全く同じ味がしました。天助マーケットには豊富な種類のお弁当とお惣菜もあります。価格も手頃でとてもおいしいです。

そして天助マーケットの隣にはクレッセント・カフェ・アンド・ベーカリーというパン屋さんがあります。クレッセント・カフェ・アンド・ベーカリーではあんぱん、メロンパン、ロールパンや食パンなどを販売しており、菓子パンは主に1.1ドルから２ドルくらい、食パンは一斤２ドルです。このお店のパンは日本のおいしいパン屋さんのパンと同じ味がします。天助マーケットとクレッセント・カフェ・アンド・ベーカリーの組み合わせは貴重としか言いようがありません。まるで自分が日本にいるかのような錯覚に陥り、あまりの幸せに泣けてきそうな位です。

There are several Asian supermarkets in Cleveland where you can buy special ingredients for Japanese cooking. Unfortunately, there are no Japanese groceries in Cleveland, which are specialized only in Japanese products. However, both Columbus and Pittsburgh, which are not so far from Cleveland, have Japanese groceries. Each of them has different types of appeal. I would like to show you how they are appealing.

CAM (Cleveland Asia Supermarket)

CAM is probably the biggest Asian supermarket in Cleveland. CAM offers products from China and Japan. You can find natto, ramen, frozen food for obento, gyoza wrappers, Asian cabbage, burdock roots, and kabucha squash at CAM. It is just 10 minutes drive from Trader Joe's in Beachwood and Miles Farmers Market in Solon. I go to CAM when I stop by these two other markets.

Park to Shop

This is the second biggest Asian supermarket in Cleveland, and it is conveniently located in downtown Cleveland. Park to Shop offers Chinese, Vietnamese, and Japanese products. Park to Shop does not have as many Japanese products as CAM does. However, you can purchase things like natto, ramen, tofu, and fresh Asian vegetables at Park to Shop.

Tensuke Market

Tensuke Market is in Columbus. It takes good two hours from Cleveland to Tensuke Market. However, it is worth traveling. As far as I know, this is the best Japanese supermarket except Mitsuwa in New Jersey, which is the biggest Japanese supermarket in the U.S.A. Tensuke Market is a small version of common supermarkets in Japan. You can basically find everything you need for Japanese cooking at Tensuke Market. It offers fresh sashimi and Japanese vegetables. Surprisingly, the Japanese cucumbers I bought at Tensuke Market tasted just like cucumbers in Japan! Tensuke Market also has a variety of obento and small homemade dishes to go, which are reasonably priced and taste very good.

Next to Tensuke Market, there is a Japanese bakery called Crescent Cafe & Bakery. It offers breads such as bean paste buns, melon buns, butter rolls and Japanese-style pain de mies. Sweet buns are mostly priced between $1.1 to $2.0. A loaf of pain de mie is $2.0. The breads from Crescent Cafe & Bakery taste the same as those from a good bakery in Japan. Having Tensuke Market and Crescent Cafe & Bakery together is just so precious. I was almost going to cry for joy! I felt as if I had been in Japan when I visited Tensuke Market and Crescent Cafe & Bakery.
