こんにちは。２週間前の大雪がうそのように、クリーブランドはすっかり春になりました。気温も摂氏７〜１０度まで上がり、マイナス１０度位でも暖かいなあと思っていた冬を遠くに感じます。朝起きると、鳥のさえずりが賑やかで、自然もまた春の到来を喜んでいるように感じます。
暖かさに誘われて、私もやっと出掛けたい気持ちがむくむく湧いてきました。私はクリーブランドでもクヤホガ川の東側に住んでいるため、西側に行くことはほとんどありませんでしたが、ついに先日ウェスト・サイド探索に出掛けて来ました。東側とは違って、西側には小さな個性的な個人経営のお店が幾つもありました。今回訪れたお店の中でも、特に選り選りのお店をご紹介したいと思います。
ウェスト・サイド・マーケットから西に数分。ゴードン・スクエアには小さなお店が幾つも建ち並んでいます。ミン・アンはそのゴードン・スクエアの東の外れにひっそりと店を構えています。扉を開けてお店に入ると、懐かしいビニールのテーブルクロスが掛かったテーブルが並んでおり、驚いたことにお店にいたお客様の約半数はアメリカ人のようでした。今回私が食べたものは牛肉のフォーと、春巻きが載った冷たい麺。そのインテリアやお客様から察した予想を裏切り意外や意外、なんとお味は本物でした。特に牛肉のフォーはホーチミンで食べたフォーに非常に近く、牛肉の自然な旨味、スープのさっぱり感、ハーブの香りが効いた本格派です。しかも値段は小さいどんぶりで5.25ドルとお手頃。もう一つ試したエッグ・ロール・ウィズ・バミセリはお店の看板メニューで、冷たい麺に太めの手作りの春巻きが載っています。甘酸っぱいたれを掛けて食べると、優しい味わいに甘酸っぱいたれがアクセントとなって、いくらでも食べられそうです。こんなに本格的な料理を出すエスニック・レストランがあるとは、さすがクリーブランド！このお店の発見で、クリーブランドにはまだまだ見つけていない素敵なお店があるのではないかという期待を高まらせました。

ベトナム・レストラン・ミン・アンのほど近く、デトロイト通り沿いにラティテューユード・４１はあります。落ち着いた雰囲気のダイナーで、カフェ飯のようなごはんが楽しむことができます。金曜日の夜に行ったこともあり、お店は近所の人たちで一杯です。その日注文したものはシュリンプ・ポ・ボーイ。ポ・ボーイとはフランスパンに揚げ物を挟んだサンドイッチで、南部の名物料理のひとつ。南部ヴァージニアに住んでいた時はよく食べたポ・ボーイですが、ここオハイオでポ・ボーイにお目に掛かるとは！フライド・シュリンプの数こそ少な目だったものの、衣の中の海老は大振りでプリプリ。具のレタス、トマト、シュリンプ・フライ、パンのバランスが程良く、特にパンは素朴な味わいで、最後まで飽きずにぺろりと食べてしまいました。付け合わせには太めのフライドポテトが付いて来て、すごいボリュームです。二人で一皿を分けても十分でした。月曜〜土曜日の朝は手頃な朝ご飯のセットがあり、次は早起きをして朝ご飯を試してみたいと思います。

ウェスト・サイドにはいくつかアンティークのお店がありますが、中でもとりわけ個性的なお店がフラワー・チャイルドです。何と言うべきか、支離滅裂、奇想天外、ありとあらゆるものが店内に陳列され、強いて言えばミッドセンチュリーがテーマになるのでしょうか。山のようなガラクタからお宝を探す気力・体力がある時でないととても太刀打ちできません。価格もまちまちで、安いものもあれば、高いものもあり、ひとつひとつ真剣に見ていると気が遠くなるような思いですが、アンティーク好きな人なら必ずやひとつやふたつ欲しいものが見つかるお店だと思います。宝探し気分の日にお勧めのお店です。

Spring has come! It has been so warm these days in Cleveland. The sun shines and birds sing. Everybody looks happy because of that. I had been feeling like I was locked in my apartment during the snowy winter days, but now the sunlight has lured me to go out and enjoy something new in town! So I went out to discover the West Side of Cleveland, which I had rarely visited except for the West Side Market. I found some nice privately owned little shops and restaurant there. I want to write about my some of the shops I liked in the West Side.
Minh-Anh restaurant is located nearby the Gordon Square Arts District. I have heard of the reputation of this restaurant several time since I moved to Cleveland. When I entered the restaurant, I found that many customers were Americans and their interior looked kind of old fashioned. Those two factors actually led me to believe this restaurant does not serve an authentic Asian food, but my expectation turned out to be wrong. Their food was real! Their pho noodles had the flavor of what I had in Ho Chi Minh City, and their Egg rolls with vermicelli tasted like homemade with good ingredients. I couldn't stop eating the egg rolls dipped in the tasty sweet sour sauce. Those were delicious! Their prices were affordable too. A small bowl of Pho Saigon (cinnamon rare beef with rice noodles) was only $5.25 and Bun Cha Gio (egg rolls with vermicelli) was $7.95. Finding this small restaurant made me think that I could discover more of unknown treasures in Cleveland.

Latitude 41n is near Minh Anh Restaurant on Detroit Avenue in the Gordon Square Arts District. This place is a neighborhood diner/ coffee house serving quality comfort food. The restaurant was nicely crowded with neighbors when I was there at Friday night. I delightfully found Po Boy on their menu, which I used to enjoy when I lived in Virginia. I ordered it, and it was good! FYI, Po Boy is a kind of Southern food, and it is basically a baguette sandwich filled with fried seafood. I liked their Po Boy though there were not as many pieces of shrimp fries as I expected. Their bread had a nice rustic flavor, and it went well with other ingredients such as lettuce and tomatoes. The big sandwich came with hand-cut fries. It was such a huge potion, so we shared a plate, but it was still enough to make me full. I liked their food and atmosphere. I want to come back to try their reasonably priced big breakfast menu.

Flower Child is the most unique collectibles shop I found in Cleveland. It seems to have all sorts of collectibles, and the theme seems to be Midcentury. It is really up to you to think to decide whether you think the shop has piles of junk or treasure. You really need to be ready to hunt for what you like among the all sorts of things randomly displayed in the shop. If you had enough energy to look throughout the shop, I am sure that you would find at least one or two things you have been looking for. It is a great shop when you are in the mood for a treasure hunt.
