異国でオリンピック中継を見ると、日本でオリンピックを見るのに比べ、注目される選手や種目が随分違って面白いなあと思います。日本では女子フィギュア・スケート、モーグル、カーリングなどが人気ですが、アメリカで人気なのはスノーボード、モーグル、そしてショート・トラックです。特に男子スケート・ショート・トラックにはアポロ・アントン・オオノというスター選手がおり、彼はテレビに頻繁に登場します。名前から察せられるように彼は日系人で、彼の父親は日本生まれの日本人です。彼が注目を集める理由はその卓越したスケート技術もさることながら、その端麗な容姿にある気がします。俳優の伊藤英明さんを彷彿とさせる柔和な面持ちで、人気の理由もうなずけます。
私はあまりテレビを見ないので、我が家のテレビは繋がれないまま角に追いやられているのですが、この時ばかりはしっかりと接続され、部屋の中心に据えられています。今はオリンピック中継を鑑賞するのがもっぱら夜の楽しみになっています。
The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics began this week. We tend to forget the Winter Olympics, but I think that the athletes look even more impressive on the ice and snow at the Winter Olympics than the Summer Olympics. I am pretty sure that I will end up wanting to watch it this winter too.
Living in another country now, it is interesting to see the athletes and games that are not usually covered by the Japanese media. One of those sports is Men's Short Track Speed Skating. There is one star athlete in this sport called Apolo Anton Ohno. The American media chases him to get photos and interviews. The reason Apolo attracts so much attention is not only his superb skating skills, but also his appearance. Quite honestly, he is very handsome. As you might have supposed from his family name, Apolo is a Japanese American. His father is a Japan-born Japanese.
I placed my TV set, which is usually so neglected and even not connected, in the center of my room to enjoy watching the beautiful performances of the great Winter Olympians. Now, it is time to close my book and enjoy the show.
