ちょっと前の話ですが、お正月休みを利用してシカゴに行って来ました。シカゴはクリーブランド以上に寒かった！今回の旅の目的は主にシカゴのミツワに行く事でしたが、他にもいくつか良いお店を見つけたので、ご報告したいと思います。
結論から先に言うと、シカゴのミツワは期待よりもずっと小さかったです。規模的にはコロンバスにある天助とニュージャージーのミツワの間くらいです。ちろん中西部の日系スーパーではどこよりも大きく、また品揃えも充実しているのですが、ここまで来るのに車で７時間も掛かることを考えると少々期待外れでした。
お寿司とラーメンをフードコートで食べましたが、お寿司は美味しいという程ではありませんでした。でも、三頭火のラーメンはニュージャージーの三頭火よりもおいしかったです。食後にあずきと緑茶のアイスも食べたのですが、これもまた味が薄く、少し残念でした。
クリーブランドから７時間掛けてシカゴのミツワに行くなら、車で２時間で行けるコロンバスの天助に行く事を私はおすすめします。天助はお刺身もおいしいですし、隣にあるクレッセント・ベーカリーのパンもおいしいです（特に食パン）。また隣接する書店では古本から雑貨まで扱っており、あらゆるものが見つかる割に、お値段がお手頃なのです。更に近所にはグレータースとジェニスというとてもおいしいアイスクリーム屋まであり、言う事はありません。
友人の意見を聞くと、コロンバスの天助は小さすぎると言う人もいますし、またシカゴのミツワで一日過ごした！という程のミツワファンもいますので、結局のところは好みの問題ということになるのでしょうか。
ミツワ以外にも、今度シカゴまで行ったら必ず立ち寄るだろうというお店を発見しました。それはビニーズ・ビバレッジ・デポです。クリーブランドにはヨーロッパ産、特にフランスのワインと蒸留酒が充実した酒屋が無いのが難点でしたが（まだ見つけていないだけかもしれません。。。）シカゴで素晴らしい酒屋を見つけました。フランスのカルヴァドス、イタリアのグラッパ、アルメニアのキルシュ、ブラジルのカシャサなど普通のお酒屋さんでは見つけにくいお酒が揃っています。またワインも国、地域、葡萄の種類ごとに分類して陳列してあり、多種多様な銘柄がずらりと並んでいます。価格もまた安く、クリーブランドで１８ドル位のワインがビニーズ・ビバレッジ・デポでは１３ドルでした。もちろん、好みのお酒をたくさん買い込んで来ました。名酒の他に、ワインに合うチーズ、クラッカー、サラミやスモーク・サーモンなども販売しています。
フォックス・アンド・オーベル・マーケットはシカゴを中心に展開する高級食材店で、ちょっとディーン・アンド・デルーカのような感じのお店です。ワイン、チーズ、チョコレート、コーヒーといったおいしいもの好きなら誰もが夢中になる品々が所狭しと並んでいます。店の真ん中辺りで量り売りしているのですが、私は「メキシカンチリ・アーモンド・チョコレート」なるものを購入しました。カリカリのアーモンドに口当たり滑らかで、こくのあるダーク・チョコレートがコーティングされています。食べると、最後の頃にチポレのぴりりとした辛さが効いてきます。大人の味わいで、こんなおいしいものが気軽に買えるシカゴはやはり都会だなあと思いました。
I went to Mitsuwa in Chicago for the first time and found it much smaller than I expected. Its size is somewhere between Tensuke Market in Colombus and Mitsuwa in New Jersey. It is a good Japanese supermarket offering all kinds of Japanese groceries. It didn't appeal to me that much because it took us 7 hours to get there from Cleveland. Also, their products are actually about the same as what you find at Tensuke Market, which is just 2 hours away from Cleveland.
I stopped over their food court and tried their sushi, a bowl of ramen noodles, green tea flavored ice cream, and red bean paste flavored ice cream. The ramen noddles from Santoka were great, but everything else was unremarkable, which made me a bit disappointed.
If somebody in Cleveland would like to get real Japanese ingredients and is thinking of going to Chicago to get them, I would definitely recommend Tensuke Market instead. Their sashimi is actually fresher than Mitsuwa's. In addition, there is a Japanese bookstore dealing carrying all sorts of stationary products as well as a Japanese bakery using only organic ingredients right next to Tensuke Market. There are even excellent ice cream shops like Jeni's and Grater's close to Tensuke Market. I prefer going to Tensuke Market because I can enjoy Japanese groceries, a perfectly baked fluffy Japanese style loaf bread, inexpensive used Japanese books, and also wonderful ice cream all in one day when I go to Columbus.
I personally certainly like Tensuke Market the best of the Asian supermarkets in the Midwest, but some of my friends are big fans of Mitsuwa and they even say that they can spend a whole day at Mitsuwa. I guess it comes down to a matter of preference.
Another interesting spot I visited in Chicago was Binny's Bevarage Depot, which is like a large liquor warehouse. You can find rare spirits such as French Calvados, Italian Grappa, Brazilian Cashasa, or Croatian Kirsch there. In addition to exotic spirits, they also have a huge collection of wines sorted by countries, regions, and grapes. I bought a bunch of bottles of my favorite wines because their prices were much better than the prices of wine stores in Cleveland. They have a nice little deli corner for gourmet grocery including artisan cheese, salami, and smoked fish. I was not able to try any of them this time, but I would like to get some special food to accompany with wine next time.
At the end of the day in Chicago, I made a quick visit to Ox & Obel Food Market, which is a local Chicago gourmet supermarket. They nicely display a good selection of wine, cheese, chocolate, and coffee beans in their limited space. I tried their "Mexican Chile Almond Chocolate," which were well-roasted crunchy almonds covered with silky smooth high quality dark chocolate with a hint of chipotle. It was delicious! I actually envy Chicagonians a little bit because they can easily get such excellent food like this in their city. I know a lot of grocery stores in Cleveland, but this was especially refined and something you cannot find in Cleveland.
