では、なぜわざわざ飛行機に乗ってセント・ルイスまで行ったかと言うと、目的は唯一つ。ゲートウェイ・アーチを見るためです。ゲートウェイ・アーチは２０世紀最大の現代建築の傑作のひとつで、エーロ・サーリネンがデザインしました。日本にいる時から、このアーチを見るために一度はセント・ルイスに行ってみたいと思っていたのです。セント・ルイスは見所が多い場所とは言いにくいのですが、素敵な場所をいくつか見つけましたので、ご紹介したいと思います。
まず、何を差し置いても外せないのは、私の旅の目的でもあるゲートウェイ・アーチです。ゲートウェイ・アーチは建築、デザインが好きな人のみならず、セント・ルイスを訪れるほとんどの人が足を運ぶ観光名所です。ミズーリ川沿いに堂々とそびえ立つ、マクドナルドのMマークを半分にしたようなアーチの写真をどこかで目にしたことがある方も多いのではないでしょうか？一生に一度は是非見てみたいと思っていたこの建築は、実際に間近で見ると、想像以上に美しいものでした。放物線を描くようなその形は、人の手によって作り出されたとは信じ難い程に完璧な曲線で、一歩一歩、視点を変えるごとに変わりゆくその美しさに、一瞬たりとも目を離すことができませんでした。サンディエゴのソーク研究所と京都の桂離宮が、これまで見たなかで一番美しい建築でしたが、ゲートウェイ・アーチも忘れられない建築のひとつになりました。時間が無い方も、セント・ルイスまでいらしたら、このゲートウェイ・アーチだけは見逃さないで欲しいと思います。
アーチの美しさを堪能したところで、すっかり旅の目的は果たされてしまいました。ですが、もう少し時間に余裕がありましたので、郊外のピューリッツアー美術館まで足を伸ばすことにしました。ピューリッツアー美術館を訪れた目的は、またも建築です。この美術館は安藤忠雄によって設計されました。
ピューリツアー美術館は美術館という名前がついているものの、毎日公開されているわけではなく、水曜日と土曜日のみ開館しています。（詳しくはホームページでご確認下さい。）特別展を基本としており、常設作品もごく僅かです。最寄り駅から向かう途中、本当にこんなところに美術館があるのだろうか、と不安になってしまったのですが、ありました。安藤建築のシンボルマーク、コンクリートの箱が。（失礼！）
ガラスとコンクリートに包まれた、静かな空間に入ると、建物の中程に水辺が設えてありまます。コンクリートの狭間に真直ぐに落ちて行く泉はとても静かで、水辺にいると、時間を忘れ、静寂な気持ちになりました。特別展を見ながら外にある中庭に出ると、そこにはリチャード・セラの作品があります。いつかDia:Beaconにある作品を見に行きたいと思っていたのですが、思いがけないところでセラの作品を見ることができました。彼の作品は彫刻と言うべきなのでしょうが、ほとんど建築とも言える大掛かりなものが多く、直線と曲線から生み出される独特の空間は、経験する彫刻とも言えるでしょう。鉄板の壁を渦のように曲げた大きな作品の中に入って、傾斜する金属のすき間から空を見上げると、自分が今セント・ルイスにいることをすっかり忘れてしまいました。安藤忠雄の建築は東京を思い起こさせ、セラの作品はマンハッタンを思わせました。そして作品でも建築でもない、その間に広がる空を眺めていると、ここは東京でも、マンハッタンでも、セント・ルイスでも、どこでもない場所のような錯覚を起こしました。
ピューリッツアー美術館は作品の多い美術館ではありませんが、建築と現代美術が好きな方なら、気に入られるのではないかと思います。駅を降りてから、美術館まではやや距離がありますので、一人で行く予定の方や、日本からお見えの方は、道中を十分気をつけていらして下さい。
そして最後に、忘れてはならないのは、おいしいものです。セント・ルイスはセント・ルイス・スタイルのバーベキューリブで知られていますが、地元の方のお勧めナンバー・ワンはここパピーズ・スモークハウスです。この店は建物の側面に入り口があり、通りからはちょっと分かりにくいのですが、気をつけてサインを探してみて下さい。店はセルフ・サービスのカジュアルな雰囲気で、お値段もとてもお手頃です。雰囲気は手軽、でもお味は天下一品です。私はハーフ・リブにコールスローとスウィート・フライドポテトのサイドを付けて注文したのですが、このリブの立派なこと。長時間掛けて桜とリンゴの木で燻された肉を一口齧ると、驚く程肉が柔らかで、スモークの自然な甘い香りが広がります。肉をゆっくりと噛み締めると、口の中で肉と脂が溶け合うようでした。余りのおいしさに、この短い滞在中、何とかもう一度このリブを食べに行きたいと思っていたのですが、残念ながら二度目の訪問は果たせませんでした。あの甘い香り、溶けるような食感を思い浮かべると、今でも涎が出て来ます。是非パピーズ・スモークハウスに行ってみて下さい。アメリカならではのバーベキューの味を堪能できるのではないかと思います。
この他にもダウンタウンには雰囲気の良いワイン・バー、個性的な本屋さん、デザイン雑貨を取り扱うお店など、面白いお店がいくつかありましたが、今回の旅のハイライトはアーチ、ピューリッツアー美術館、セント・ルイス・スタイルのバーベキューの三つに集約されるように思います。いつかセント・ルイスに行く機会がありましたら、是非参考にして下さい。

I visited St. Louis a while ago. Now, many people told me that there is really nothing to see in St. Louis. Indeed, there weren't many attractions, especially downtown, but I found some places that I really liked. So today I am going to write about the highlights of my trip to St. Louis.
I went to St. Louis to do only one thing, that was to see the Gateway Arch, the masterpiece by Eero Saarinen, the genius 20th century architect. I had been hoping to get a glimpse of it for years even when I was still in Japan. The arch is huge, so you can see the arch from almost anywhere downtown, but I recommend going to the foot of the bridge and taking a close look at it. From a short distance, the arch looked breathtakingly beautiful. I just couldn't believe that a human actually designed this perfect shape. It looked like a part of nature, or a jewel delicately placed on earth. I couldn't help gazing at it for a long time from all the directions. This arch is definitely worth a look. Wether you are a fan of architecture or not, I am sure you would adore the beauty of this architecture. Luckily, I was able to see the arch from my hotel room. I never felt tired of looking at the arch. It kept changing its appearance. It shined brightly in the morning, and it reflected warm orange light at the sunset. Every moment had its own beauty. This is the first, and the last thing you, no doubt, must see in St. Louis.
The next place you might want to visit in St. Louis is the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts. The most significant part of this foundation is its building. The building was designed by one of the most acclaimed Japanese architects, Tadao Ando. Another thing we shouldn't forget about the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts is that they own an piece by Richard Serra. These two pieces of architecture and art make it worth taking the subway from downtown. When I entered the building, I saw the refined design of Ando's own philosophy. As I walked through the long hall way, I found a courtyard fountain in between the building. It was just a fountain, but it was very special. The water line of the fountain reminded me of the horizon. I found it very meditative, and it brought me peace in my mind for a moment. When I continued my way to the yard, I found the outdoor piece by Richard Serra. I was actually able to walk into the piece. While looking up the sky beside Ando's building and Richard Serra's work, I just forgot that I was in St. Louis. I felt that I was in Tokyo or Manhattan, but it could have been anywhere. It was a funny feeling.
The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts do not have many art pieces, but each piece is very powerful. I think the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts would be a great destination for you, if you are an art lover. It opens its door only on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Please check the details on the website before you plan your visit.
The last place you should visit in St. Louis is Pappy's Smokehouse. St. Louis is famous for St. Louis style ribs. Pappy's Smokehouse is the most popular among locals and considered to be the best BBQ restaurant in St. Louis. Pappy's Smokehouse is on Olive street, but the front door is on the side of the building. So, even though you can't find the door walking down on Olive street, don't be tricked. You are almost there. (Actually, if you look at the building carefully, you will find the sign on Olive street too.) It's a very casual self-service restaurant, yet neat and clean. You need to place an order at the counter first, then take a table to wait for your order. I, of course, ordered their famous rib with coleslaw and fried sweet potatoes, the very basic sides. The rib was very good. It had a sweet natural fragrance of apple & cherry wood smoke. The meat was tender and juicy. I actually wanted to come back to this small eatery to taste another rib during my short stay in St. Louis. I couldn't make a second visit, but it was that good, and I still miss it.
If you visit all these three places, you would never regret your visit to St. Louis. You can easily make the whole tour in a day. I also found some nice shops in downtown, but these three places I introduced in this article were the highlights of my trip. If you ever have a chance to visit St. Louis, I definitely recommend these three places: the Gateway Arch, the Pulitzer Foundation for the Art, and Pappy's Smokehouse. I am sure you will love them.
