今回の私の旅の目的はワイナリー巡り。フィンガーレイク地方には１００近いワイナリーがあり、アメリカでも最も北にあるワインの生産地のひとつでで、土地柄特に上質の白ワインが生産されています。今回は訪れたワイナリーやその他のお店をいくつか紹介したいと思います。
このワイナリーはフィンガー・レイク地方のワイン発祥の地と言っても過言ではありません。その名が示すようにドクター・コンスタンチンが創設したワイナリーで、彼はこの地のワイン発展のために生涯尽力しました。ドクター・コンスタンチン・フランクの売りは何と言っても白ワイン。特にリースリングはワイン雑誌での評価も高く、数々の賞を受賞しています。
ワイナリーは小高い丘から湖を見下ろす眺めの良い場所に有り、テイスティングはツアーのような感じで行われ、着いた順に一定の数がまとまるとテイスティング・ルームに入り、終わったらまた次のグループが入るというシステムです。そして素晴らしいことに、テイスティングは無料です。何て幸せ。美味しいお酒を遠慮なく無料で飲めること程、酒好きにとって幸せなことはありません。
7〜8種類のワインをテイスティングしましたが、意外なことに最も印象に残ったワインは名産のリースリングではなく、シャルドネでした。後味はあくまで辛口でありながら、果物の甘みと旨味がはちみつのように凝縮しています。これぞ良く出来たアメリカの白！といった味わいです。価格も品質に対して手頃で、シャルドネは一本１５ドルでした。サービスもなかなか良く、テイスティング係の方もしっかり質問に答えてくれます。何本かまとめてワインを購入すると値引きがあり、たくさんの人がワインの包みを抱えて帰って行いくのを目にしました。

フィンガー・レイク地方は白の産地と決め込んでいましたが、意外なことに素晴らしいの赤の作り手がいました。それがシェールストーン・ヴィンヤーズです。謳い文句は「私達は赤ワインを作っています。」赤ワイン作りに対する情熱と自信がここからも伺われます。非常に小さなワイナリーで、種類は多くはないのですが、ここで飲んだワインはどれも上質でした。アメリカでおいしい赤ワインを、しかも手頃な価格で見つけるのは至難の技です。白の聖地にこんな場所があるとは！しかもナパ・ソノマにも負けない実力のワインです。粒揃いのラインナップの中でも秀逸だったのはピノ・ノワール。ピノ・ノワール特有の軽さに加えて、豊かな香り、柔かな口当たりで私の知るアメリカのピノ・ノワールの中ではピカ一でした。価格は２２ドル。決して安い訳ではありませんが、これだけ丁寧に作っていることを考えると妥当な価格だと思います。テイスティング料は２種類で２ドル、更に２ドル追加すると次のランクのワインを更に２種類試すことができます。

数あるワイナリーの中でも、最高のサービスを受けたのはここハーマン・ジェイ・ウィーマー・ヴィンヤーズです。人気があるワイナリーではお客様が多く、対応に追われているため、つっけんどんな応対を受ける事も珍しくありませんが、このワイナリーでは、込み合う時間に訪れたにも関わらず、温かなもてなしを受けました。小さなワイナリーで、テイスティング・ルームもこぢんまりとして趣味が良く、その日は晴れていたので、パティオで試飲させてくれました。シャルドネ、ドライ・リースリング、ピノ・ノワールどれもおいしかったのですが、意外な発見がロゼです。あくまで辛口の飲み口ありながら、ほんのりとしたベリーの香りが広がり、食事に良く合いそうです。価格は驚きの１０ドル。価格が手頃な上に、ラベルもとてもきれいだったので、購入してとても嬉しくなりました。
葡萄畑を臨む庭には椅子とテーブルが何組か置いてあり、ピクニックを楽しむこともできます。おいしいワイン以上に良い時間を過ごすことができたワイナリーでした。

最後に紹介するのはセネカ湖畔のジェニーバ近くのりんご果樹園、レッド・ジャケット・オーチャーズです。この果樹園のおすすめは何と言っても富士りんごジュースと桃。アメリカではよくアップル・サイダーという名の茶色いりんごジュースを目にしますが（ちなみに炭酸ではありません。。）、アメリカに来て初めて日本のりんごジュースのような白く濁ったジュースを見つけました。おいしかったです。リンゴジュースだけでも１０種類近くあり、中でも富士リンゴジュースのおいしさはダントツです。店頭ではりんご以外にも採れたての果物を販売しており、そこで買った白桃は日本の桃のように繊細な味わいでした。アメリカの桃は不思議なことにカリカリとした固い食感なのですが、この桃は一口食べるごとにジュワッと果汁がしみ出す柔らかな桃でした。幼い頃、夏休みに父とよく食べた桃の味を思い出しました。特別な味でした。

I went to the Finger Lakes for the first time on Labor Day weekend. The Finger Lakes region, though little known in Japan, is a popular resort in upstate New York. The Finger Lake region produces high quality white wine: in fact, there are almost 100 wineries in the area. I went to several wineries and found some very good wines. I want to write about the wineries and a shop that I would definitely recommend when you next visit the Finger Lakes region.
Dr. Konstantin Frank
As the name of the winery suggests, this winery was established by Dr. Konstantin Frank, a scientist at Cornell University. He was a wine -making pioneer in the Finger Lakes region and dedicated his life to developing the wine industry. This winery is especially famous for its Rieslings and received many awards. The amazing thing about this winery is that they offer free wine tasting. I went to many wineries in the U.S.A., but Dr. Konstantin Frank was the first winery where I enjoyed free wine tasting. I tried most of their whites, and they were all good. I especially liked their Chardonnay among others. It had a concentrated fruit flavor and honey-like sweetness with a creamy texture, yet it finished up dry. It was $15 a bottle. I would not say this is inexpensive, but for its quality, this cost performance is excellent. I saw many people holding bottles of wine in their hands in the parking lot. They don't need to charge a tasting fee because their visitors love their wine and buy it a lot.

Shalestone Vineyards
I had thought that the Finger Lakes region was all about white wine, but I was mistaken. I found a little gem for red wine lovers on the east shore of Seneca Lake. Shalestone vinyards is a small winery that produces great red wines. Their motto is, "Red is all we do." I think this describes what they do well. They had only 8 wines on their list, and I tried four of them. They were all outstanding. Their Pinot Noir was especially unforgettable. It had a light body with aromatic bouquet and elegant silky texture. It was perfect. A bottle of Pino Noir was $22. It's not inexpensive, but it's extraordinarily reasonable for its quality. In fact, all of their wines were under $25. This was unbelievable because it's so difficult to find a good red wine for a reasonable price even in Sonoma Valley. This winery is one of the most fabulous finds I made during this trip.

Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard
What impressed me at this winery was their service. They welcomed me and treated me like their friend even during busiest hours. This vineyard has a nice small tasting room and a patio. I enjoyed tasting in their patio under the sun. It was very pleasant. This winery is famous for good quality white wines, but I actually liked their dry rose the best on their list. It was a descent dry rose with a hint of strawberry aroma. This dry rose was only 10 bucks a bottle. What a great deal! I had a very good time with good wine and nice people at Herman J. Wiemer. I'm sure I will come back!

Red Jacket Orchards
Red Jacket Orchards is located nearby Geneva on Seneca Lake. They mainly produce apples and have a various kinds of apple juice. They offer free juice samples in their retail shop. There, I found Fuji apple juice! It had whitish yellow color and tasted like Aomori apple juice in Japan. It had a good combination of sourness and sweetness. It tasted like a real apple while apple cider tastes a bit sweeter and milder than a real apple. I loved it! I have never seen this type of apple juice in the U.S.A before. They also sell other kinds of fruits, such as plums, peaches, and berries. I bought their white peaches. They were very good too. They tasted like white peaches in Japan. Japanese white peaches are soft, delicate, and juicy while most of American peaches are sort of firm. The taste of the peaches from Red Jacket Orchards reminded me of summer days in my childhood. I often enjoyed white peaches as a snack with my father during summer. He liked white peaches. I felt a little nostalgic while eating the peaches. I want to come back to Red Jacket Orchards even only to get these special peaches. Definitely, I will the next summer.
