長いことシンシナティのチリを食べてみたいと思っていたのですが、ついに念願叶って本場のチリを食べて来ました！これまで色々な人に「シンシナティのチリって他のチリとどう違うの？どんな味？」と質問して来たのですが、「うーん、シンシナティ・チリ？何て言うか、まあちょっと変わってるよね。」という分かるような分からないような答えが決まって返ってきたので、返って私の期待や興味は高まるばかり。天気の良い日にクリーブランドから車で約４時間、一念発起して出掛けたのですが、シンシナティはチリだけでは無く、思ったよりもずっと素敵な街でした。
まず今回の旅の目的は何と言ってもチリ。地元にはいくつか有名なお店があるようですが、私達はシンシナティの郊外にあるブルー・アッシュ・チリを選びました。Skyline Chiliや Camp Washington Chiliといったお店の方が有名なのですが、あえて郊外にある小さなお店を選んだのは、ネットでのレビューが全般に好意的だったことと、フード・ネットワークで取材を受けていたからです。フード・ネットワークは賛否両論ありますが、クリーブランドの中で取材されたお店を見ても、案外地元の人に愛されている良いお店を選んでいるように思います。
そして、お目当てのチリ！ですが、これはとてもおいしかったです。私はチーズ・コーニー（1.6ドル）というシンプルなホットドックの上に削ったチェダーチーズとチリが乗っているものを食べましたが、パン、フランクフルト、チリ、チーズ、どれをとっても自然な味で、それぞれの具も程よい量で、とてもバランスの取れたホットドックでした。ネットの写真から巨大なものを想像していたですが、意外や意外、小さめのサイズで、丁度良いというよりはむしろ小さいくらいです。女性でも二つ位ペロリと食べられるのではないかと思います。そして感じの良いウェイトレスさんがテキパキと気持ちよく対応してくれました。４時間掛けて来た甲斐がありました！その他にいわゆるシンシナティ・チリと言われるスパゲッティにチリを載せたものを食べましたが、スパゲッティはパスタというよりむしろ細めのうどんのような感じで、チリと一緒に食べると、じゃじゃ麺を食べているような気分になりました。チリが優しい味なので、スパゲティーと合わせて食べた時に、ややパンチに欠けるかなと思いました。
そして次に訪れたのはシンシナティのダウンタウンにあるシンシナティ現代美術センター。この美術館は建築界のノーベル賞とも言われるプリツカー賞を受賞した女性建築家ザハ・ハディッドが設計しており、以前からその建築を見てみたいと思っていました。建築的にも、内容的にも優れた現代美術館というのは案外少ないものですが、シンシナティ現代美術センターは小粒ながらも個性的な展覧会を開催しており、建築も作品のひとつのように楽むことができました。特に展示室と展示室を結ぶ導線の設計がユニークですので、建築を見るためにいらした方は、外側を見るだけでなく、是非美術館の中まで入ってみて下さい。ちなみに入館料は大人7.5ドル。火曜休館です。
昼頃に訪れたため、ダウンタウンはランチに出掛ける人々で賑わい、雰囲気が良さそうなレストランやカフェがいくつもありました。シンシナティ出身の人は決まってクリーブランドよりもシンシナティの方が好きだというのですが、素朴でありながら、文化的な香りがあり、住んだらきっと好きになる街だろうなあと思いました。今回はあまり時間が無く、川沿いなどを見ることができませんでしたが、次回来た時はもっと散策してみたいと思います。

I finally had a chance to taste real Cincinnati chili in Cincinnati the other day. I've been interested in Cincinnati chili for quite a while because I've heard many people say, "It's so unique." It took me a good four hours just to drive down there from Cleveland, but it was worth it. I really enjoyed this trip to Cincinnati.
The main purpose of the trip was to taste real Cincinnati chili. I chose "Blue Ash Chili" in the suburb of Cincinnati to get the very best one. There are other famous chili restaurants in Cincinnati, but I selected Blue Ash Chili because this is a family owned small restaurant that's been in business for more than 40 years, and featured on the Food Network. Some people criticize the Food Network, but I think it is a pretty reliable news source of good restaurants.
Their chili was excellent as I expected. I had a cheese coney (one dollar sixty cents), which is basically a hot dog with chili with shredded Cheddar cheese. It was a well made hot dog. The balance among the frank, the bread, the chili, and the cheese was just perfect, and all the ingredients tasted very natural. I'd expected a huge hot dog according to the photo I saw on the Internet, but it was small! I think that even a small Japanese woman can easily eat two coneys for lunch, but given its price, it was a right portion. I also tried so-called "Cincinnati chili" that is a bowl of chili over spaghetti with shredded Cheddar cheese. It reminded me of "Jya-jya-noodles," a famous food from Morioka because the texture of the spaghetti was sort of like Udon noodles and Jya-jya noodles also have meat sauce on them. I thought the chili should be seasoned stronger when they put over spaghetti. It tasted a little too bland. Except that seasoning, I had a very satisfying experience at Blue Ash Chili because their food was great, their service was friendly, and their price was unbeatable!
We headed for the Contemporary Arts Center in downtown, Cincinnati next. The museum is famous for its architecture. In fact, I've been interested in this museum because a Pritzker award winning woman architect, Zaha Hadid designed this building. I really enjoyed both the building and the exhibitions there. Somebody commented that the Contemporary Arts Center is a gem in Cincinnati, and I definitely agree with the opinion.
Downtown, Cincinnati was attractive too. It was a nice size and filled with people enjoying lunch time. I found some nice-looking restaurants and cafes during my short time there. The city had a cultural atmosphere and energy. I understand why people from Cincinnati love Cincinnati so much. I thought I would love Cincinnati if I lived in Cincinnati. I did not have enough time to walk around downtown this time, but I want to come back and discover the city more.
