ジム・ジャームッシュ、フィリップ・ジョンソン、そしてアメリカン・スプレンダー/Artists from the Cleveland Area

ジム・ジャームッシュ、フィリップ・ジョンソン、アメリカン・スプレンダー（ハーヴィー・ピーカー）この三つの共通点は何でしょうか？それは出身地がオハイオ州クリーブランド地域ということです。そしてまた私が好きな芸術家や作品でもあります。

ジム・ジャームッシュはご存知の通り、独立系映画監督の旗手。パーマネント・バケーション、ストレンジャー・ザン・パラダイス、コヒー・アンド・シガレットなど映画好きにとって忘れられない記念碑的な作品をいくつも撮っています。彼の出身地はクリーブランド郊外のアクロンです。

フィリップ・ジョンソンはアメリカにとって最も重要な初期の建築家のひとり。ハーバード大学建築学科卒業後にハーバード・ファイブの一員として名を馳せ、アメリカに近代建築という概念を根付かせるために大きな役割を果たした一人です。彼の作品の最も有名なものに、ニュージャージー郊外に建てた自邸「グラスハウス」がありますが、クリーブランドにもフィリップ・ジョンソンの作品があり、ユニーバーシティ・サークルとダウンタウンの間にあるプレイハウスは礼拝堂のように壮麗な空気を漂わせながら、ひっそりと街の一角に佇んでいます。

クリーブランド周辺にはその他にも建築の見所があり、ケース・ウェスタン・リザーブ大学のピーター・ビー・ルイス・ビルディングはフランク・オー・ゲイリー作。ロックン・ロール・ホール・オブ・フェイムはI.M.ペイ作。近郊のウィロビーにはフランク・ロイド・ライトが設計したルイス・ペンフィールド・ハウスがあるなど建築好きの心を程良く満たしてくれます。またフランク・ロイド・ライトの傑作「落水層」までは車で二時間余りで行く事ができます。

話はそれましたが、クリーブランド出身の人物についてです。最後の一人は日本でもヒットした映画「アメリカン・スプレンダー」のモデルでもあり、また作者でもあるハーヴィー・ピーカー。この人の力の抜け方は並ならぬものがあり、日本の漫画家、蛭子能収さんをどこか連想させます。二人とも職業が漫画家であることは、やはり何か関係があるのでしょうか。

オハイオ州クリーブランドは芸術家を生む気風があると地元の人は言います。絵を描く人、作品を作る人も実際に多く、この街に住むようになってから、自らを「芸術家」だと名乗る人に出会うことも少なくありません。この意見について個人的には懐疑的だったのですが、最近はクリーブランドという土地柄は確かに芸術家を育む要素があると思うようになってきました。というのもクリーブランドの人々は非常におおらかなため、「こうしなければいけない」「うまくやらなければいけない」「人に非難されたら」というような社会的な圧迫や緊張感が全般に少ないのです。そこで絵であろうと、何であろうと、好きな事を自由な心で好きなようにやったらいいという気分になってきます。それこそが個性的な作家達を生む土壌なのではないかと思います。

Jim Jarmusch, Philip Johnson, and Harvey Pekar. What do these three have in common? The answer is that they are all from the Cleveland area! I want to write a little bit about these American artists from the area.

As you may or may not know, Jim Jarmusch is one of the most important independent film makers in the United States. He directed "Permanent Vacation", "Stranger Than Paradise", and "Coffee and Cigarettes" among others. Jim Jarmusch is not technically from Cleveland, but from Akron. So he is from the Greater Cleveland.

Philip Johnson is one of the greatest American architects in history. He was a members of the Harvard Five and was instrumental in spreading modern architecture in the United States. His most famous work is the Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut, but The Cleveland Play House, located between University Circle and downtown, is also outstanding. It has a very special glorious atmosphere. Cleveland actually has some other buildings designed by masters of modern architecture, including the Peter B. Lewis Building at Case Western Reserve University by Frank O. Gehry, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum by I.M. Pei, and the Louis Penfield House by Frank Lloyd Wright. (This one is actually in Willoughby Hills, but it is just 20 minutes away from Cleveland.) Also, the Fallingwater, the masterpiece by Frank Lloyd Wright, is located in a suburb of Pittsburgh and is just 2 hours away from here. I would not say that this collection of architecture in Cleveland is the best in the States, but it is somewhat nice to have in my town.

The last great guy from Cleveland is Harvey Pekar. American Splendor, a movie that is modeled after him and written by himself, was a smash hit in Japan. You can see his love for Cleveland here, there, and everywhere in his movie.

I can't believe that many of my favorite artists are from the area where I live now, but I think this fact is not just a coincidence. Local people say that Cleveland develops people's talents for art. I'd been personally skeptical about this, but now I think this is true. People in Cleveland are pretty receptive to anything and anybody. So, people living here are free from pressure in a very good way and able to feel free to try anything that they think cool. Sometime even I feel like creating some art simply because I know nobody would look down on me even though I made something not appealing to anybody. People would say "Wow! You really like this. Great for you!" I think this good nature of people helped artists to create something truly unique and creative. I admire this lovable trait of people in Cleveland, and I want to preserve it by certifying them as a living world heritage if I can.

クリーブランドの隠れた名所 / A hidden treasure in Cleveland

　最後に牛乳についてのブログを書いてから、随分経ちました。その間もちょこちょこいろいろな場所を開拓していたのですが、今日はその中でもとびきりの発見についてお伝えしたいと思います。

　その場所は写真を載せたこの場所。どこか分かりますか？答えはクリーブランド・クリニックの屋上テラスです。ダウンタウンの町並みの背景にはエリー湖が広がり、クリーブランドの目抜き通り、ユークリッド通りが縦に走っています。

　何度も何度も前を通り過ぎたことはありましたが、これまでクリーブランド・クリニックに立ち寄る機会がありませんでした。余り知られていませんが、ここクリーブランド・クリニックの正面玄関であり、心臓病棟でもあるミラー・パビリオンには素晴らしい現代美術のコレクションが所狭しと並んでいます。この美術コレクションを見るために、初めてクリーブランド・クリニックを訪れました。

　場所柄行きにくいと感じる方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんが、所蔵品は一般に公開されており、音声ガイドツアーも無料で利用することができます。その質と量は、どの現代美術館と比べても引けを取らぬ程です。クリーブランドでナム・ジュン・パイクやメディア・アートをこんなにも高いレベルで体験できる場所があるとは本当に驚きでした。

　その素晴らしいコレクションの締めくくりに立ち寄ったのが、ここルーフトップ・テラスです。冬の空、快晴、夕焼け、花曇り、いつ行っても街の表情が凝縮された風景は飽きる事がありません。まだ行った事が無い方には、是非一度見て頂きたいこれぞ「クリーブランド」という景色です。

It's been a while since I wrote my last article about the great milk I found. I have been busy doing things and making new discoveries in Cleveland. I want to write about the very best I have discovered in the mean time. The treasure I found is the view in the photograph I posted above this article. Do you have any ideas where this is? This is the view from the Rooftop Terrace of the Cleveland Clinic. I had passed by the Cleveland Clinic many many times, but I never had a chance to stop by the clinic until I went to see their contemporary art collection like a month ago.

The things you view from the Rooftop Terrace are quintessential Cleveland: downtown skyscrapers, Lake Erie, Euclid Avenue, and the industrial neighborhoods between downtown and the Cleveland Clinic. Every time I go there, I enjoy a different view due to the time and the weather. It is so beautiful even on a icy winter day. I believe that the view from the Rooftop Terrace is the highlight of their fabulous art collection.

You might wonder why they have the contemporary art collection at the hospital. The Art and Medicine Institute in the Cleveland Clinic offers the art program as a part of patient activities, but the collection is open to the public. They have one of the best contemporary art collections I have ever seen. The collection includes works by Name June Paik, Ori Gersht, and William Wegman among other renowned contemporary artists. I did not expect to see such a fine contemporary art collection here in Cleveland. It is just amazing. The audio tour guide is available in English, Spanish, and Arabic for free, and the parking fee is free for one hour.

I highly recommend you stop by the Cleveland Clinic to experience their great contemporary art collection and the fabulous view from the Rooftop Terrace if you have never been there before.
