The shop is filled with beautiful crafts, arts, and kimonos tucked away near the corner of Boundary Street and Vulture Street in West End. The owner, Kazuyo, found this perfect location upon the closure of her previous shop in Paddington, which she started with a few friends of hers in 2008. Kazuyo’s Collection opened its door in 2013 to house pieces of Teshigoto, which literally translates as handwork. Every single one of the products has a human touch and a story, and we can easily spend hours having a look at her collection ranging from masterpieces of pottery to works of emerging artists. “My customers have great eyes. I don’t curate anything. They choose what is special to them. They enjoy shopping here just like they do at antique markets in Paris,” she says.
My personal favorites include modern Japanese dresses and accessories such as clutch bags made of kimonos and necklaces and earrings made of Mizuhiki (a band of decorative cords that are used to adorn gifts). I love half-sleeved-dresses made of Tomesode, one of the most formal outfits for married Japanese women. They use silks of the highest quality that do not wrinkle easily, just like luxury silk scarves. I can wear the dress even in summer and give it a wash at home, which is important to me.
People come to Kazuyo’s Collection not only to look for beautiful handcrafted goods but also to have a little chat with Kazuyo. “I am mum of everyone,” she describes herself. She treasures her customers by sincerely listening to them. That’s probably the biggest gift, which we may never find anywhere else. Be it either a hand-stitched kitten or a smile from Kazuyo, what we get at Kazuyo’s Collection gives us comfort and energy for tomorrow.
ウェストエンドはバウンダリーストリートの一角にあるKazuyo’s Collectionは作家物からおばあちゃんの手作りを思わせる手芸まで、幅広い作品を取り扱ってきました。２００８年にパディントンで友人達と開いたお店を畳んだ後、２０１３年に和代さんはこのお店を開きました。
「物選びを含め、お客さんが私のお店を作っています。私は何もしていません。パリの蚤の市みたいに皆宝探しにやって来ます。」と和代さん言います。私自身、地元作家の器や帯を使ったハンドバックなど次々に目移りし、時を忘れてお店で過ごすこともしばしばです。一番のお気に入りは留袖で作ったドレスで、着物が着られない真夏も普段着からパーティーまで重宝しています。他にも水引のアクセサリーや染め物のトートバッグなど、伝統的な工芸品を現代的に作り替えた作品は毎日を楽しくしてくれます。
和代さんを訪ねて来るお客様も多く、初めて来たお客様にも常連客にも同様に、真剣に耳を傾ける姿をよく目にします。日本文化を発信し、作家を育て、時代と共に試みを続けるKazyo’s Collectionは、その扉が開いているだけで嬉しくなるような、特別な場所です。お店で一番人気の手縫いの子猫達は、どこか和代さんを思わせる気がします。
Il y a un petit magasin qui est plein des beaux produits artisanaux comme la poterie et des kimonos dans la rue Boundary. Kazuyo’s Collection a ouvert ses portes en 2013. Elle a trouvé ce lieu parfait après la fermeture de son ancienne boutique à Paddington qu’elle tenait avec des amis depuis 2008.
Presque tout chez Kazuyo’s Collection est fait à la main. Donc il n’y a pas deux choses qui soient exactement pareilles. “Mes clients cherchent quelque chose de spéciale comme s’ils étaient au marché aux puces à Paris. Ils trouvent leur bonheur dans ce magasin. Je n’ai rien à faire,” dit Kazuyo.
J’aime beaucoup les produits qui utilisent des techniques traditionnelles japonaises comme des boucles d’oreilles avec décorations Mizuhiki (cordons très fins en papier) et des sacs faits avec la ceinture Obi (qui se porte traditionnellement avec les tenues japonaises). J’ai acheté une robe moderne faite avec le tissu de kimono il y a quelque années. Je l’adore parce que c’est tout à fait confortable et très facile à maintenir.
Les clients ne viennent pas seulement pour chercher des jolis cadeaux mais aussi pour voir Kazuyo qui a un petit sourire sur son visage tranquille comme un lotus dans le bassin. Le trésor le plus précieux chez Kazuyo’s Collections, c’est peut-être Kazuyo elle-même.
